We can all learn from ‘Cheers’

By Steph Shore on October 9th, 2007

Word is Britney Spears wants to become a bartender. Everyone is all up-in-arms because Britney is in the middle of a custody battle and has been mandated by the court to submit to drug and alcohol testing, and apparently she has a substance abuse problem, etc. But listen — As someone who has Britney’s best interests at heart, I think this is a great idea. Hear me out. It worked really well for Sam Malone!

On “Cheers,” Sam Malone (Ted Danson) was a recovering alcoholic who destroyed his career as a Red Sox pitcher with his substance abuse problem. Then, he became the owner/bartender of a bar! And he stayed sober! He only slipped once, after his relationship with Diane collapsed, and he got back on the wagon really quickly.

ANYWAY. Is everyone aware that the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in town? It’s supposed to be really cool, and though the tickets can get pricey, the cheapest ones are only $13.50.

You drink and drive — YOU LOSE!

By Steph Shore on September 25th, 2007

I have several things to address today. Several very important things.

First of all, is everyone aware that the temperature is expected to reach a record-breaking high today? The record temp. for today, Sept. 25, is 89 degrees Fahrenheit. Today, it is expected to be in the low 90s. This is absurd! It’s been officially fall for four days now! I went to Target yesterday and got a cute little fake pumpkin and a pumpkin candy dish, and now all my candy corn is going to melt! Whoever says global warming isn’t real … Well, it feels pretty warm to me.

Kiefer Sutherland was arrested this morning in LA on a DUI. And just two days ago, George Clooney got in a motorcycle accident. For the love of God, would you two be more careful?! Listen, if you guys get yourselves killed, who will we have left?! Huh?! Matt Damon?! NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

OK, deep breath. All is well — we still have Christopher Meloni, and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” returns tonight at 10 p.m. on NBC. I could not be more excited. Well, I might be equally excited on Thursday when “Ugly Betty” and “Grey’s Anatomy” premiere, but for today, I’m pumped for “SVU.” Sadly, poor “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” has been relegated to the USA network on Thursdays. I guess it was only a matter of time. Not even Christopher Noth can make “CI” anywhere near as good as “SVU.”

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth has a new album out today, “Trees Outside the Academy.” That’s cool. But here’s the cooler part: Any and all college students can see him perform for free Thursday night (Sept. 27) at MFA’s College Night. It’s from 7 p.m. to midnight, and students can also check out the new “Walk This Way” exhibit (shoes galore!) and attend a “DJ dance party.” Partying in the Museum of Fine Art? Sounds like a good idea to me.

Fall festival time!

By Steph Shore on September 19th, 2007

Hey, everybody — Welcome to my new blog. I’m Stephanie Shore, Deputy Inside editor for The News. You may remember me from my Inside column, “A Critical Point.” Or you may not. Either way, I’ll be blogging from now on about arts and entertainment — on-campus and worldwide. So, basically, bookmark me! And leave comments! If you have anything to say about something in The News, also, feel free to leave it here and I’ll pass the message along. Lastly, I create the calendar page for the Thursday issue, so if you know of any events you think we should mention, you can leave those here, as well, or e-mail them to calendar@nu-news.com. Cool! Thanks!

Now that that’s taken care of, onto my interesting news. This weekend is FESTIVAL TIME! You may have a town fair near you back home, if you live in the ‘burbs like me (Berlin Fair in Connecticut; hell yes!), and like me, you probably miss it like crazy when fall rolls around. This weekend, however, there’s more fair-like events than I even know what to do with. None of them have rides, unfortunately, but there are carnival games, food, entertainment and even some awesome inflatable bouncy things.

The two on-campus are Westfest and Piketoberfest. They’re both on Saturday, though Westfest goes from noon-4 p.m. and Piketoberfest goes from 3-8 p.m.

Perks of Westfest (which is in the West Village quad) include a free barbecue, cotton candy, slushies, a bungee run, a velcro wall (whatever that is), carnival games (including a dunk tank where students can dunk their RAs) and live music from North Lot, Cassavettes and Baird Caner.

Piketoberfest, hosted by Pi Kappa Alpha on Centennial Commons, has a free barbecue and games as well. BUT - it also has live music from Gone Baby Gone, Endway and Brand New!

Now, how our campus is going to manage to host six bands, one of them being a pretty famous one, two barbecues, and all these games without being completely destroyed is beyond me. But hey — it’s a pretty good deal. Two awesome events at once, and all you have to do is show up!

If you feel like getting off campus and are in the need of some serious freebies, head over to Collegefest at the Hynes Convention Center (900 Boylston). If you’ve never been before, here’s what you need to know: It’s $10 to get in, but you must have a student ID. There are going to be a TON of companies there giving out a TON of free stuff. There will be more live performances — Fabolous, We Are The Fury, Whitestarr and Shop Boyz (”Party Like a Rockstar,” anyone?). The good news is, you don’t have to decide between this and the on-campus festivals. You can attend Collegefest on Saturday (noon-7 p.m.) or Sunday (noon-6 p.m.).

There’s many more fun events in the area this weekend! Check out the Inside calendar page in Thursday’s issue for more.
